Part-Time Mens First Team Coach

Job Description

The club:

Woking Hockey Club is a big club in the heart of Surrey with two pitches and clubhouse on site (and plans for further development). The club consists of 7 Men’s Teams, 6 Ladies Teams, 4 Vets teams and a huge high-performing junior section with 500+. The Men’s 1st XI are in the South East Premier Division, with aims of making it into the national league.

The role:

Woking Hockey Club are looking for a committed coach or player/coach to take responsibility for coaching and leading Men’s 1st XI. The Men’s 1st XI Head Coach is responsible for ensuring the high performance of the Men’s 1st team, whilst also supporting the other men’s teams alongside the director of hockey and working closely on the development of high-performance juniors.

The successful candidate will be looking to solidify their position in this league with the long-term goal of promotion to the National League. Currently the team train twice each week, on a Tuesday and Thursday, with matches on a Saturday. This can be discussed with the successful candidate to fit in around their potential other commitments. We are looking for someone who will join the club with a long-term vision of growing all sections of the club, leading this with performance in the 1st team.

The role includes one month of pre-season and can include coaching the indoor season. There are other opportunities within the club to increase the size of the role, such as leading a junior team outdoor or indoor, or even heading up a junior section of the club. The club will also provide opportunities to develop as a coach, through England Hockey workshops; and with regional, national, and international experience.

The role will initially be August 2022 – April 2023, with scope to increase this to 2025.

About you:

The club is looking for someone who is ambitious and driven, with experience playing or coaching at a high level.


  • Experience of performance hockey.
  • Successfully completed EH Sessional Coach Course or EH Level 2 (or equivalent).
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate enjoyable and challenging hockey sessions.
  • A well-organised individual with great communication skills capable of managing coaches and running sessions of up to 25 people.
  • An ambitious coach aimed at growing the whole club.
  • Personal skills.


  • Experience of playing or coaching in the National League (or equivalent).
  • Experience supporting players through the EH Player Pathway.
  • An individual aiming to grow the junior section of the club, and create a strong link between junior and mens section.
  • Track record of junior performance development.

DBS check will be made by WHC.


Pay will be very competitive and linked to the person’s specific qualifications and experience. There is an opportunity of this to be through PAYE or IR35 as defined by UK Gov for contractors.
