Full-Time Performance Network – Performance Coach
Three months ago, Hockey New Zealand signed off a bold initiative (called the Performance Network) to accelerate the development of players, coaches and umpires. It is driven by the need to develop players, coaches and umpires who have the aspiration, the will and the skill to represent New Zealand.
Quality coaching will be fundamental to the success of the Network. For the first time, Hockey NZ will be investing in full-time coaches who have the opportunity to play a critical part in the development of future Black Sticks. Although based in different parts of the country, with responsibility for the players assigned to them, the coaches will operate as a coaching Team. They will have a passion for sharing learning, leveraging each other’s strengths, growing themselves and the team. In doing this, they will model the Hockey NZ values and the philosophy and principles of the Network.
The Network is a bold initiative because it seeks to achieve something very challenging – to build a strong connection between Community Hockey and High Performance Hockey. The coaches will play an active part in this, by building strong relationships with Association coaches and with the Black Sticks coaches. The purpose of these connections is to ensure learning is shared, communication is consistent and there is alignment around how players develop to become future Black Sticks.
To be part of the coaching team in the Network is to be part of something bigger than the role of the coach. The coaches will play a key role in supporting the Network to start, to grow and ultimately to flourish. They will celebrate the development of players, coaches and umpires who are good people, highly skilled, ready for the Black Sticks environments.
